Microcredentials

Microcredentials are short, targeted learning experiences designed to facilitate the acquisition of specific knowledge, skills, and competencies.

They provide a flexible and accessible approach to personal and professional development, enabling learners to engage in meaningful learning alongside existing academic, professional, or personal commitments.

Microcredentials enable learners to combine and build upon learning experiences aligned with their individual objectives, creating personalized learning pathways that support the targeted development of competencies and the achievement of specific academic or professional goals.

Fully aligned with the European standards, microcredentials ensure the recognition, quality, and portability of learning outcomes across institutions and countries. With stackable, transferable credits, they foster academic mobility, promote lifelong learning, and provide practical, career-oriented skills that meet evolving labour market and societal needs.

What is a UNITA microcredential?

A UNITA microcredential is a learning experience specific to a small volume of learning, certified by the UNITA Alliance and its universities, validating the acquisition of specific knowledge, skills, or competencies through an assessment process of the learning outcomes that a learner has acquired. This assessment involves evaluating learning outcomes against transparent and clearly defined criteria.

Characteristics of microcredentials

Short, targeted learning experiences: UNITA microcredentials are compact learning units, usually worth less than 15 ECTS credits (approximately up to 150 hours of workload). They are digitally certified and designed to be recognised across Europe.

Competence-oriented design: These programmes are designed to develop knowledge, practical skills, and applied competences, in line with the needs of the expectations of employers, public institutions, and civil society.

Flexible delivery formats: Microcredentials are tailored to adult learners and are offered in various formats, including face-to-face, online, or blended learning, allowing participants to adapt their studies to their personal and professional schedules.

Modular and stackable approach: Each microcredential can be taken independently or combined with others to build personalised learning pathways. Accumulating several microcredentials may lead to more comprehensive lifelong learning qualifications.

Practice-oriented methodology: The learning approach emphasises active participation and real-world application, supporting both the development of new competences (upskilling) and the updating of existing ones (reskilling).

Quality assurance framework: All microcredentials are delivered in accordance with the internal quality assurance procedures, ensuring consistency, transparency, and academic rigor.

Benefits offered by UNITA microcredentials

UNITA microcredentials address key challenges such as:

Keep pace with change: Microcredentials help learners update their skills in response to digital and green transitions shaping today’s labour market.

Bridge skills and jobs: Microcredentials are typically designed in consultation with external stakeholders, which increases their relevance and supports a closer alignment between what learners acquire and what employers require.

Open access to higher education: Microcredentials offer shorter, more flexible entry points that allow individuals to engage with university-level learning without committing to full degree programmes and potentially progress further if they choose.

Support lifelong adaptability: Microcredentials enable targeted learning at different stages of life, supporting continuous professional development rather than one-time qualification.

Promote inclusion and opportunity: By offering flexible formats and reduced time commitments, microcredentials can be more accessible to diverse groups, including working adults, career changers, and those with limited access to traditional education.

Empower active participation: Microcredentials can support the development of knowledge and competences that enable individuals to understand and respond to societal, economic, and technological changes, thereby enhancing both employability and informed civic engagement

Create pathways forward: Microcredentials can function as stackable building blocks within broader learning trajectories, allowing learners to gradually accumulate achievements that contribute to larger qualifications and career progression.

Two types of UNITA microcredentials

UNITA Alliance provides two categories of microcredentials, differentiated by their origin and approval process.

  • Microcredentials with the UNITA Label. Developed by a university and assessed according to the Alliance´s common criteria
  • Joint microcredentials of the Alliance. Developed collaboratively by universities within the Alliance
Digital certification and Europass

Europass is the common European CV format that allows citizens to clearly and consistently present their knowledge, skills, and competences. It improves transparency and supports academic and professional mobility across Europe by making qualifications easier to understand and compare.

To use it, you can create a free Europass account, which gives you access to a set of online tools that allow you to:

  • record and update your work experience and educational background
  • store diplomas, certificates, and other qualifications securely in a personal digital wallet
  • manage and share your documents easily when applying for jobs or study programmes across Europe
