The mission of the State University of Moldova is to provide high-quality higher education and to prepare highly qualified professionals capable of responding to the evolving needs of society and the labour market. At the same time, USM is committed to advancing fundamental and applied research, with particular attention to current socio-economic challenges and the transfer of research outcomes into practice.

In pursuing this mission, the University focuses on developing students’ academic and professional competencies, strengthening its scientific and research capacity, promoting ethical, civic, and cultural values, and ensuring the quality of its educational provision. USM also contributes to the development and implementation of higher education policies and strategies and is committed to further integration into the European Higher Education and Research Area.

Over more than seven decades, USM has educated approximately 120,000 graduates who have contributed to a wide range of sectors, including education, economics, culture, law, public administration, and politics. Its contribution to the development of Moldovan higher education was recognised in 2011 with the award of the Order of the Republic, the country’s highest state distinction.

Internationalisation is an important component of the University’s institutional strategy. USM maintains approximately 110 bilateral cooperation agreements with higher education institutions in 28 countries and is a member of major international academic organisations, including the International Association of Universities (IAU), the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), and the Eurasian Association of Universities (AEU).

As part of its commitment to internationalization, the State University of Moldova also

participates in the Geminae network of the UNITA Alliance. This initiative strengthens

international academic cooperation across continents in teaching, research, mobility, and governance, contributing to institutional and academic development.

Overall, the State University of Moldova combines a longstanding national academic tradition with an increasingly international orientation. Through its commitment to education, research, innovation, and international cooperation, USM continues to play a central role in the development of higher education and scientific capacity in the Republic of Moldova.

The University hosts more than 750 research groups registered with the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), bringing together over 6,000 researchers working across more than 3,000 research lines. Among these researchers, approximately 750 are CNPq Productivity Fellows, placing UFMG third among Brazilian institutions with the highest number of researchers in this category and first in the state of Minas Gerais. The University also maintains numerous laboratories and institutional research infrastructures, providing state-of-the-art facilities and resources to support artistic, scientific, and technological research activities.

UFMG stands out internationally for its strong and comprehensive internationalisation policy. The University invests substantial financial, material, and human resources to advance internationalisation across all areas of activity, guided by principles that combine academic and scientific excellence with global engagement.

These efforts support the development of strategic partnerships and a wide range of academic collaborations worldwide, strengthening UFMG’s role as an internationally connected institution and enhancing opportunities for research cooperation, knowledge exchange, and academic mobility.

Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais is part of the Geminae network of the UNITA Alliance. The programme aims to strengthen international academic cooperation across all continents through the exchange of best practices in teaching, research, mobility, and governance, contributing to the development of more inclusive, sustainable, and globally connected higher education systems.
