The UNITA Rural Mobility Programme is the focus of an academic article in the Journal of Rural Studies entitled “Temporary Higher Education Mobility and the Reimagination of Rural Areas: Insights into the Motivations and Expectations of Students and Hosts in the UNITA Rural Mobility Program in Italy and Spain.”
The article was authored by four scholars from different Italian institutions: Vittorio Martone, Professor in the Department of Cultures, Politics and Society at the University of Turin; Francesca Uleri, Professor at the Faculty of Education of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano; Giacomo Pettenati, researcher at the University of Eastern Piedmont; and Elena Brusadelli, researcher at the Gran Sasso Science Institute.
The four scholars focus on the ongoing transformation of rural areas, particularly on the development of social environments capable of fostering connections with the “outside” world and on the role of inbound and outbound mobility flows, which significantly influence local economic and social structures.

In this context, the article identifies the UNITA Rural Mobility Programme as one of the initiatives actively addressing these challenges. By encouraging students to undertake mobility experiences in rural areas, the programme seeks to contribute to the preservation of rural social capital while promoting mobility opportunities within higher education.
The authors emphasize the programme’s objectives: fostering new synergies in education, research, and entrepreneurship, while generating a positive impact on rural communities throughout these countries.
The scholars are particularly interested in understanding the factors driving students’ growing interest in undertaking mobility experiences in rural areas. They argue that examining the expectations and motivations of both students and host institutions can help clarify their role as connectors between the “outside” and the “inside” of rural communities.
To explore these dynamics, the researchers collected data through a case study of the UNITA Rural Mobility Programme, focusing on two regions whose rural areas have experienced significant population decline in recent decades: the provinces of Zaragoza and Teruel in Spain, and the mountain areas of the provinces of Biella and Cuneo in Italy. Their aim was to understand how these territories are perceived and interpreted in different contexts and by different stakeholders.
According to the authors, monitoring these dynamics over time may provide valuable insights into the long-term economic and social sustainability of such initiatives, as well as into the ways they are perceived by local institutions and integrated into local communities. This process may ultimately contribute to recognizing, strengthening, and consolidating the value of programmes such as UNITA Rural Mobility.
