The Universidade Pedagógica de Maputo (UPM) is a leading public university in Mozambique, historically recognised as the country’s main institution dedicated to teacher education.
UPM hosts approximately 17,000 students and is structured into 8 faculties covering key areas such as education, sciences, technology and social development, within an academic environment oriented towards teaching, research and community engagement.
The mission of the University is training highly qualified graduates who can contribute creatively to sustainable economic and socio-cultural development. UPM aspires to be a higher education institution of quality and excellence in teaching and learning processes, as well as in research and outreach services at national, regional, and international levels.
.

The institution was established in 1985 as a Higher Pedagogical Institute and subsequently became a university in 1995, progressively expanding its national presence through campuses across all provinces of the country
In 2019, following a government reform, it was restructured as an autonomous university based exclusively in Maputo, marking a new phase in Mozambique’s higher education system.
The university is continuously engaged in curricular reform and institutional modernisation, with the aim of aligning its activities with national priorities and international academic standards.
Within the framework of the Geminae Programme of the UNITA Alliance, the Universidade Pedagógica de Maputo actively participates in a network of non-European partner universities, contributing to the strengthening of academic cooperation through the exchange of best practices in teaching, research, mobility and governance.
