The mission of the Université d’Antananarivo is to provide high-quality university education, integrated with research activities, with the aim of contributing to the intellectual, scientific and social development of Madagascar.
Building on these solid foundations, the University of Antananarivo stands out as the country’s leading public university and as a central reference point for academic, cultural and scientific life at the national level.
Located in the capital city of Antananarivo, the University contributes, through rigorous teaching, to the training of highly qualified graduates capable of addressing major societal and environmental challenges, while strengthening its role within regional and international academic networks.

Over time, the University has expanded its presence across the territory through the establishment of additional university centres in Antsiranana, Fianarantsoa, Toamasina, Toliara and Mahajanga, thereby consolidating its central role within the Malagasy higher education system.
Within the framework of the Geminae Programme the University of Antananarivo is part of a network of non-European partner universities of the UNITA Alliance. The Geminae Programme aims to strengthen international cooperation through the exchange of best practices in teaching, research, mobility and governance, fostering inclusive, sustainable and globally connected higher education systems.
Recently, the Université d’Antananarivo was awarded the UNITA – Geminae Best Practice Award 2025, conferred during the UNITA Best Practices Awards held at the University of Zaragoza on 4–5 September 2025. The award recognises the University of Antananarivo’s innovative approach to doctoral education within the Doctoral School Agriculture, Livestock and Environment (A2E), highlighting its strong commitment to student-centred learning, international cooperation and institutional capacity building, in line with international standards for quality higher education.
