Exploring borders beyond geography: UNITA’s inter-alliance BIP returns for its fourth edition
The fourth edition of the inter-alliance Blended Intensive Programme “Borders and Boundaries: Practices of Categorisation” brought together students and academics from across Europe to explore one of today’s most relevant societal challenges. Organised by the University of Turin in collaboration with Saarland University within the Transform4Europe framework, the programme also featured international expertise from UNITA’s Geminae Network, reinforcing the Alliance’s global dimension.
Our Geminae partners: Université Cheick Anta Diop de Dakar (Senegal)
Founded in 1957 and officially inaugurated in 1959, the Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (UCAD) is one of Africa’s most prestigious and influential higher education institutions. Renamed in 1987 in honour of the renowned Senegalese scholar, philosopher, and anthropologist Cheikh Anta Diop, UCAD has played a central role in the academic, scientific, and social development of Senegal and the wider African continent for decades.
Studying mountain biodiversity across borders: UNITA’s Blended Intensive Programme at the University of Turin
The University of Turin welcomed students from across the UNITA Alliance for the Blended Intensive Programme “Biodiversity in Mountain Ecosystems”, combining international collaboration, fieldwork in the Italian Alps, and laboratory research. The programme offered participants hands-on experience in ecological monitoring while strengthening their understanding of environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation.
IEEE DEMOcon 2026: UNITA highlights innovation in digital education and micro-credentials
Professor Marina Marchisio Conte represented UNITA at IEEE DEMOcon 2026 – Digital Education and MOOCs Conference, presenting the Alliance’s achievements in digital education, the Digital Campus, and micro-credentials. The conference also featured contributions from several European University Alliances, highlighting the growing importance of inter-alliance cooperation in shaping the future of higher education.

A new open-access book explores the legal challenges and opportunities associated with the development of the European Universities Alliances. Featuring contributions from scholars involved in the UNITA Alliance, the volume examines governance models, legal structures, and the institutional evolution needed to support deeper European university integration.
“My 3-minute PhD thesis” final round – July, 2nd
The final round of the 2026 edition of My 3-minute PhD thesis competition will take place on July, 2nd at 5:30 PM CET in Brescia (Teatro Mina Mezzadri). The event will be streamed online on YouTube UNITA Channel so that students and staff from across the UNITA community can enjoy it.
WP5 members gather in Pau to advance UNITA’s impact, sustainability and outreach activities
UNITA partners gathered in Pau on 17–18 June to advance work on communication, sustainability, impact assessment and international outreach. The meeting featured collaborative Task Team sessions, thematic activities and a conference with the Université du Québec, highlighting new opportunities for cooperation following the partnership signed in April 2026.
