Unita is an alliance of six Romance-language speaking research universities located in rural and cross-border mountain areas. It is constituted of the Università di Torino (Italy, coordinator), Universidade Beira Interior (Portugal), Universidad Zaragoza (Spain), Université de Pau et des Pays de l’Adour (France), Université Savoie Mont Blanc (France), and Universitatea de Vest din Timisoara (Romania), gathering more than 165,000 students and 13,000 staff members.

One of UNITA’s goals is to launch one Research and Innovation Hub in each of the alliance's three thematic areas:

- Cultural Heritage
- Renewable Energies
- Circular Economy

These three hubs will facilitate networking among research teams across the six universities in order to respond to societal issues related to the aforementioned themes within rural, mountainous or cross-border contexts. They will enable:

- the incubation of joint research projects to answer European calls for funding,
- the implementation of research training and activities at the BA, MA and PhD levels,
- the collaboration with socio-economic and cultural actors in rural territories,
- the dissemination of scientific knowledge to citizens in these territories.
